The Maldives is an island nation located on nearly 1,200 islands grouped in 26 archipelagos in the Indian Ocean. Approximately 200 islands of the Maldives Archipelago are inhabited and on 80 of them luxury resorts have been established. The Maldives are in fact a perfect place to relax – there is a tropical climate with high temperatures and a short rainy season, as well as rich vegetation, numerous coral reefs, white sandy beaches and lagoons. The Maldives are known for wooden houses on stilts that are placed above the water surface, as such accommodation offers a vacation in the paradise atmosphere. Unfortunately, up to 80% of the archipelago is located only 1 meter above sea level and for that reason the Maldives are among the areas at risk of damage as a result of continuous rise of water level caused by global warming.
