Kotor is a historic town located at the end of the Bay of Kotor in southwestern Montenegro. Its history dates back to antiquity, but the preserved architecture is mostly medieval. Kotor is a town with a typical Mediterranean character. Its atmosphere is created by stone houses with roofs covered with rust-colored ceramic tiles and the narrow streets that have an asymmetric arrangement, encircled by the old defensive walls, which together with the fortress of St. John create the best preserved fortification system in this part of Europe. The old town of Kotor became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
