Visby is a port town located on the western shore of the island of Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea. The town flourished in the Middle Ages thanks to trade, it belonged to the Hanseatic League, i.e. the international trade association of cities, and the town became one of the most important centers in Europe. The magnificent defensive walls that are 11 meters high, medieval houses and the cathedral have survived to this day. In the past, there were more than 20 churches in the town, however, during the invasion of the Germans in the 16th century they were all burnt. Nevertheless, visitors can still admire the ruins of those churches, the testimony of the former war. Visby is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Baltic Sea.
