The impressive Las Lajos Sanctuary is located in southern Colombia, on the border with Ecuador. Apart from the amazing architecture, thanks to which the sanctuary resembles a fairytale castle, it also worth noting the unusual location in the canyon of the Guaitara River. The temple was erected between the years 1916 - 1949 in the neo-Gothic style and its construction was founded entirely by donations from the local churchgoers. The building was built in the place of the 19th-century chapel commemorating the miracle that had happened in the canyon in 1754. According to a local legend, Virgin Mary appeared to a deaf-mute girl and cured her. An image of Mary was found later in the cave where the revelation had occurred. The construction of the chapel was initiated by blind Fray Juan, who according to the legend, regained his eyesight when the temple was completed.
