The fortress located in the Ukrainian Kamianets-Podilskyi on the Smotrych river is a former Polish defensive fortress, within which there are the Old Castle and the New Castle. The Old Castle was erected in the 14th century and for the next four hundred years it was expanded and modernized. Numerous towers dominate over the defense walls, among them there are Różanka Tower, Pope’s Tower, Tenchynska Tower and Lanckorońska Tower. The Turks stone bridge built at the end of the 15th century connects the historic fortress and the Old Town. The Turkish siege of Kamianets-Podilskyi was immortalized by Polish Nobel Prize laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz in the novel Fire in the Steppe.
