The town of Gudhjem is located in the north-east of the Danish island of Bornholm, in which the climate resembles the Mediterranean one. The town has its own harbor and fishing has been the traditional occupation of its inhabitants for centuries. The country's best smokehouses are located in Gudhjem and their chimneys are a characteristic feature of the landscape. Smoke-preserved fish from Gudhjem were exported to other parts of the country as early as in the 19th century. The town has preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the 19th-century Dutch-type windmill.
