Konitsa is a small town in north-eastern Greece near the border with Albania. It is known primarily for the monumental arch bridge connecting two banks of the river Vjosa. The bridge was built by an architect Ziog Frotzos from the nearby village of Pyrsogianni. The construction itself lasted for forty-five years and was completed in 1870, it resulted in the largest arched bridge in the Balkans – an extraordinary achievement of the 19th-century engineering and architecture. The stone structure is truly impressive and on clear days a huge semicircular arch creates a perfectly round shape with its reflection in the water.
