Marseille lies in southern France on the Mediterranean Sea. The city was founded by the Greeks in the fourth century BC – they built a port here and thanks to the settlement they made profit from trade. In the Middle Ages the harbor was extended by the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John. The Old Port, called Vieux-Port by the French, is dominated by two forts: of St. Nicholas and St. John. In the years 2012-2013 the port underwent a complete revitalization, making it more accessible to pedestrians. Stunning views of the Old Port of Marseille can be seen from the Pharo park.
