Trenčín is a city with a long history, dating back to the beginning of the ancient times. There was the northernmost encampment of the troops of the Roman emperor and actually since then Trenčín plays a dominant role in the region as a major urban center. It is located in the north-west of Slovakia and is the capital of the Trenčín District. The city is dominated by the medieval Castle of Trenčín, which attracts the majority of tourists, but the buildings of the old town are also worth noticing. The city center creates a string of squares. By the main square there is a beautiful baroque church of St. Francis Xavier, which is connected with the Piarists monastery.
