Perugia is a city located in central Italy that is the capital of the Umbria region. In ancient times Perugia (then Perusia) belonged to the Etruscan cities. In the 9th century the city became part of the Papal States and several conclaves were held there. To date, many historic temples have been preserved in Perugia. The 13th-century Maggiore fountain standing in the square in front of the San Lorenzo cathedral is one of the city's landmarks. Nowadays, not only tourists, but also foreign students studying at the local university, stay in Perugia.
