Baltimore is a large American city located in the state of Maryland on the Atlantic Ocean. Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay, was attacked by the British in 1814, who - despite the 25-hour bombing – failed to win. The retreat of the Royal Navy inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem that in 1931 became the lyrics of the US anthem. Today in Baltimore there are three universities, numerous industrial plants and a seaport on the Patapsco River.
