Saint Basil's Cathedral, initially called the Cathedral of Pokrovsky, the Cathedral of the Protection of the Mother of God on the Moat, is located on Red Square next to the Kremlin in Moscow. The council consists of eight separate churches, symbolizing the eight days of fighting at Kazan: Troitsk, Nikolai Velikorecky (Velikoretic icon of St. Nicholas), Entrance to Jerusalem, Cyprian and Justin, the Three Patriarchs of Constantinople, Aleksander Swirski, Varlam Chutyński and Grzegorz Armiański. All eight churches (four main ones and four smaller ones) are crowned with characteristic "onion" domes and grouped around the ninth church in Pokrov which ends with a small dome. All churches are connected by a common base, a perimeter corridor and central arcaded passages.
