Characteristic, red and white Souter sea lighthouse was built at the top of a cliff, near the town of South Shields, in the English county of Tyne and Wear. The historic building is currently only a tourist attraction, however, on the day of opening in 1871, it was probably the most modern sea lighthouse in the world. Its exceptionality was caused by the use of electric energy.
