Edible tomatoes grow naturally in South America and have been grown there for 8,000 years. From the 16th century on, they spread around the world, although initially only as ornamental plants. Several species are of high food importance and they come in numerous varieties with different shapes, colors and sizes of fruit. In Poland, the most popular cultivated and consumed species is the tomato.
