Tulipa L. - bulbous plant belonging to the lily family. It is the most widely cultivated ornamental plant in the world. It occurs in approx. 120 species and at least 15,000 cultivated varieties. <br />
Breeders decide about the name given to a new variety. Tulips were given the names Yuri Gagarin (cosmonauts), Giuseppe Verdi and Antonio Vivaldi (composers), Diana Ross and Elvis Presley (singers), Hillary Clinton, Bernadette Chirac, Maria Kaczyńska (presidents' wives), Ronaldo (football player).
