The city of Mechelen lies in the Belgian province of Antwerp on the river Dijle. There are numerous historic temples, among them the Cathedral of St Rumbold, church of St John the Evangelist and Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk. Tourists can also visit the Renaissance chateau of Margaret of Austria and the burgher houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. At the Mechelen’s market called Grote Markt, there is the city hall with a characteristic belfry and cloth hall. Mechelen is famous for its bobbin lace called Malines, the same name is used by the French to call the city.
