Třeboň lies in the south of the Czech Republic on the river Lužnice. The town was granted civic rights in 1376 and was surrounded by impressive defensive walls. It owes its development to a convenient location on the trade route and activity of the noble Rosenberg family. In the old town of Třeboň there are the sixth-century town hall, tenement houses with colorful facades and arcades and the church of St. Giles. The town boasts the Renaissance castle too. Třeboň is a UNESCO spa town and biosphere reserve, which is sometimes called the town of ponds. There are also vast swamps, peat bogs and lush vegetation in the area.
