Stockholm is the largest city and also the capital of Sweden. It is located in the east coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula in the southern part of the country. The city itself is situated on 14 islands connected by bridges, but the whole Stockholm archipelago consists of as many as 24,000 islets, and for that reason the city is often compared to Venice. The oldest and most attractive tourist part of Stockholm is Gamla Stan, or the Old Town. It is characterized by is a tangle of narrow streets and abundance of architectural monuments. In the heart of Gamla Stan there is the Gothic Cathedral of Stockholm, its slender tower dominates over the old town buildings.
