Hangman’s Bridge, Henkersteg, is a wooden bridge located on the Pegnitz River in German Nuremberg. The bridge leads to the island of Trödelmarkt, to the building where the imperial hangman had lived. Currently, there is a small museum. The Hangman’s Bridge dates from 1457. Since then, it has been reconstructed and restored several times. After the city had been destroyed as a result of hostilities, the footbridge was rebuilt. The structure is a reminder of a specific status of a hangman in the local community. His house was at some distance from the city buildings and the inhabitants of Nuremberg avoided direct contact with the man.
