Torre de Belém consists of a hexagonal bastion and a four-storey tower. The fortress represents the Manueline style that is popular in Portugal, it also has a two-storey arms and ammunition warehouse, which at the time of its construction was quite unusual. It was built in the middle of the riverbed of the Tagus River, as the awe-inspiring port watchtower in Lisbon. For years, it housed a toll station, a prison and barracks. The impressive tower performed also representative functions. Since the great earthquake in the eighteenth century, Torre de Belém is situated on the right bank of the river. Today the fortress is a very popular tourist attraction. From the observation deck at the top of the tower tourists can admire the surroundings.
