Florence is the Italian city situated on the river Arno, at the foot of the Apennines. The history of the city is inseparably connected with the Arno river, which cuts the oldest part of the city. The river used to be the source of development of the city as well as of misfortunes. Thanks to the river the city flourished as a trade center. However, it was sometimes devastated by floods. It is no wonder that the bridges on the river Arno, among them the oldest Ponte Vecchio Bridge, are the most important and the best recognizable monuments of this city.
