Rome is the largest city and the capital of Italy. It is located in the central part of the country on the river Tiber, surrounded by hills. At present it is a large metropolis, visited annually by approximately eight million tourists. In the 1st century AD Rome, also known as the Eternal City, was the main center of the Roman Empire. The Flavian Amphitheater, also known as the Coliseum, was also built at that time. In the city there are many historic monuments that are extremely important from the historic, archeological, architectonic and artistic points of view. There are a few basilicas, squares (among them Campo de’Fiori), beautiful fountains, the pantheon, countless statues and fragments of ancient buildings. Sunny streets of Rome are very crowded and the city bustles with activity all day long. Vatican City, a walled enclave within the city of Rome, is also a big tourist attraction.
