Staithes is a village located in the county of Yorkshire in central-east England, on the coast of the North Sea. The village has been a fishing one for centuries and fishing has been the basis of its economy. At the beginning of the 20th century there were 80 fishing boats, which regularly undertook fishing expeditions. Today in Staithes there is only one fishing boat, which belongs to the family with the thee-generation tradition of fishing. More than half of the houses in the village have been bought by the residents of neighboring towns, who consider Staithes as a place for summer or weekend rest. Despite the fact that people in Staithes have almost completely given up traditional fishing and the local population has decreased significantly, the old traditions in Staithes are still preserved – women wear traditional caps, men sing old songs during the fishing choir rehearsals, whereas many residents support sea-protection organizations as the see had provided them with a living not long ago. It is very probable that attachment to the traditional way of life attracts many tourists who are tired of hustle and bustle in big cities.
